Strong Start to Insights Series Highlights Local Healthcare Leadership and Collaboration

April 10, 2026

On the morning of April 10, 2026, we were proud to host a full room of attendees for the first installment of our Business & Community Insights Series, Inside Our Hospitals: A Conversation with Council Bluffs Hospital CEOs.

The conversation began with a personal look at leadership, as Chris LaFerla invited Dave Burd and Kristen Blum to share their backgrounds and the paths that led them to where they are today. Despite different journeys, both leaders reflected on growing up in small communities. Experiences that helped shape their values and leadership styles.

Kristen Blum shared her upbringing in the small village of Rich Fountain, Missouri, and her early interest in healthcare, which led her to study health science and business before completing her master’s degree at the University of Iowa. Her connection to Council Bluffs began during an internship at CHI Mercy, where she saw firsthand the impact of community-based care and ultimately envisioned building her career in a place just like it.

Dave Burd reflected on growing up in Hebron, Nebraska, and initially pursuing business without a specific focus on healthcare. That changed during an internship at a hospital in Lincoln, where he was inspired by the passion, compassion, and purpose of those working in the field, an experience that set the course for his career.

The discussion continued with a focus on the importance of supporting local healthcare. Just like shopping local, keeping healthcare decisions within our community strengthens our local economy, supports jobs, and ensures continued investment in high-quality care close to home.

Both leaders also addressed current challenges and opportunities, including workforce needs and the importance of maintaining a safe environment for healthcare workers. As the industry continues to navigate post-pandemic realities, hospitals are adapting to increased pressures while remaining committed to delivering compassionate, high-quality care.

The event concluded with thoughtful questions from attendees, reinforcing the value of open dialogue and shared understanding.

It was a meaningful and insightful conversation, offering a true behind-the-scenes look at healthcare in our community. It was also encouraging to see strong collaboration between local hospital leadership and their shared commitment to serving Council Bluffs.
